Web Design and Technology


Bandwidth
Usually measured in bits-per-second (bps.), bandwidth determines the amount of data you can send through a connection.
Blog
A web log or online journal.
Browser
Software that is used to “browse” web pages (for example, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari)
Byte
A measurement that represents a single character.
Cache
A mechanism of temporary storage to reduce bandwidth usage. Your browser may use a cache to store web pages and images so that it does not have to reload the pages and images each time the document is visited.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheet. Most commonly used to format the appearance of HTML, and/or XHTML.
DNS
Domain Name Server. Translates domain names into IP numbers.
Domain Name
Name that identifies a website.
Firewall
A combination of hardware and software that separates a network for better security.
Flash
Third party design software formerly used for animation and interactivity on the web and other screen-based applications.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. Remote method to transfer files.
Gigabyte
1000 Megabytes
Host
A computer or server that serves information and/or documents to other computers such as a website.
HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language used in websites
HTTP
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
Java
Advanced programming language used to create software, graphic interfaces and advanced user interactivity.
Javascript
Programming language used most commonly for the web and basic user interactivity.
Kilobyte
1000 bytes.
Megabyte
1024 kilobytes
Pixel
A single point in a graphic or photographic image.
SEO
Search Engine Optimization. Semantics incorporated to optimize web pages for the best results in search engines.
Server
A computer that “serves” information to other computers.
Terabyte
1000 gigabytes
Wi-Fi
Wireless data communication.
